Carl R. Bogardus, Jr., MD

Dr. Bogardus entered his academic medical career as Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Oklahoma in1964. After a distinguished career, he retired as Professor-Emeritus April 1, 1995 and entered private practice in Oklahoma City. In September, 2004 Dr. Bogardus was asked to return to the University of Oklahoma to open a new radiation treatment facility. He is now Professor, Clinical Director and Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the OU Stephenson Cancer Center. Since his return, the Radiation Oncology program at OU has grown to six full-time physicians treating over 1,000 new patients per year. The Radiation Oncology Residency program currently supports six Residents in training.

In addition to his demanding clinical activities, another of Dr. Bogardus’ interests over the years has been compliance documentation and billing for radiation oncology services.  His textbook, now in its 19th edition, “Basic Principles of Coding, Compliance, and billing for Radiation Oncology”, provides the academic material for his teaching seminars which are presented nationally in United States 10 times each year.

In 1986, Dr. Bogardus recognized the significant need for software to assist Radiation Oncologists manage the complexity of compliance and documentation for their services.  In 2000 he developed the first commercially available Radiation Oncology electronic health record software.  This early development led to the design of the ONCOCHART® Electronic Medical Record, which is now the nation's premiere program for management, documentation, compliance and charge capture for Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Bogardus has served as president of the American College of Radiology, chairman of the board, and president of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.  He has served as secretary/treasurer of both the ACR and ASTRO, and as a member of the Board of Chancellors. In 2015 he was awarded the prestigious gold medal of achievement from both the ACR and ASTRO, the only physician to have received both medals in the same year

He is presently serving on the Council on Medical Services for the Oklahoma State Medical Association and is the Oklahoma Radiation Oncology Representative and Vice Chairman of the Novitas Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee. He serves as a Member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology’s Health Policy Advisory Board, Health Policy Council.
