MPW1: Introduction to Treatment Planning

Date & Time: February, 24, 2016, Wed 13:15 – 15:30

Venue:  KFSH&RC, Oncology centre (Oncology Conference Room)

Coordinator: Ghadeer Nazer, CMD, Radiation Oncology Physics Sec., Biomedical Physics Dept., KFSH&RC, Pager: 44302

Workshop Faculty:
Ghadeer Nazer
Target Audience :
  • Students
  • dosimetrists
  • junior physicists
  • residents
  • technicians

Prerequisites:  Continuing education courses in the morning

Workshop Description:

The workshop will illustrate to the attendees how the process of treatment planning works:

  1. Receiving the primary CT images
  2. Fusion with MRI
  3. Contouring by the clinician (concept of GTV, CTV, PTV and critical structures are introduced)
  4. Definition of isocenter, beam placement and geometry, beam’s eye view (BEV).
  5. Dose calculation and the concept of isodose lines
  6. Evaluation of the planning process using dose volume histograms (DVH).
  7. Plan verification, 2nd check, MU calc
  8. Transfer of plan to treatment unit

Learning Objectives:

The participants will learn the inputs and outputs of treatment planning and the required interaction between the dosimetrists and the various staff members: clinicians, physicists, technicians that is needed for a successful implementation of radiotherapy treatment.
