Radiobiology & Radiation Protection

Venue: Post Graduate Centre Classroom 1
Coordinator: Ghazi Alsbeih
Faculty: John Gueulette, Terry Yoshizumi, Abdelilah Aboussekhra, Ibrahim Al-Anazi, Nasser Alaboudi, Belal Moftah, Ghazi Alsbeih, Nabil Iqeilan

Target Audience:     Residents and trainees in radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, physicists, dosimetrists, scientists, researchers, teachers, radiographers, radiotherapists, students and radiation workers who need know-how in radiobiology and radiation protection or want to familiarize or update their knowledge (i.e. for CME) in this field.

Course Aim

Provide attendees with a broad overview on radiation biology and radiation protection. It will describe the current knowledge on the effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiations and heavy ions on biological systems; summarizing the mechanisms of actions, health consequences, the relative biological effectiveness, the foundations of the current permissible exposure dose limits, radiation protection and safety.

Lectures:

1. Introduction to Biology  (Ghazi Alsbeih)
2. Biological effects of ionizing radiation(Ghazi Alsbeih)
3. Biological effects of  non-ionizing radiation ( Abdelilah Aboussekhra)
4. Introduction to radiation protection (Belal Moftah)
5. Fetal dose and radiation risk ( Ibrahim Al-Anazi)
6. Radiobiology of clinical high-LET beams ( John Guelette)
7. Variation of radiosensitivity between individuals ( Ghazi Alsbeih)
8. CT Dose Concerns and Future (Size specific dose estimate in pediatric and adult body CT examination) (Nabil Iqeilan)
9. Intestinal crypt system for hadron beam intercomparison? (John Guelette)
10. Radiation Protection & Safety at the SFDA  (Nasser Alaboudi)
11. CT Scanner Shielding Methods  (Terry Yoshizumi)
