Between 1978-84, he worked in the analytical research department of the “A. Menarini” pharmaceutical company in Florence. Then he moved to the United States to specialize in the field of Nuclear Medicine. He spent 10 years abroad working in prestigious research laboratories such as the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He accrued extensive experience in the production of yttrium-90 (patented work) and in the labeling of various tumor seeking compounds. He was responsible for the implementation of several new PET tracers with the institution, not only for preclinical and clinical research, but also for routine patient care. My research interests include advanced image-guided radiation therapy, and three-dimensional dosimetry. These two interests coincide with the development and installation at MD Anderson of a magnetic resonance image-guided radiation therapy (MR-IGRT) capability. The introduction of MRI guidance into radiation therapy offers the ability to base treatment delivery on the exquisite soft-tissue visualization of MRI, which promises to improve the confidence of targeting of many tumors in the abdomen and head & neck. The highly-conformal treatment plans that can be delivered by modern techniques demand advanced dose measurement capabilities, and recent 3D dosimetry techniques show promise. My laboratory has been investigating a variety of gel- and solid plastic-based 3D dosimetry systems for their use in routine clinical dosimetry, remote audits, and dosimetry under circumstances that are challenging for conventional dosimeters. The presence of magnetic fields in MR-IGRT can affect the response of standard dosimeters in ways we are presently investigating. We are also evaluating the use of 3D dosimeters for use with MR-IGRT, where their response is less likely to be influenced by the magnetic fields. In 2004 she obtained her MSc and in 2009 her PhD degree in medical physics from university of Helsinki. In 2014 she was qualified as clinical medical physicist and in 2015 she was awarded an adjunct professor degree. Currently she is working at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a Medical Radiation Physicist – SSDL Officer. She is responsible for activities related to secondary standards dosimetry laboratories (SSDLs) and runs the IAEA/WHO SSDL Network which covers 83 SSDLs in the IAEA Member States. She has a background from both medical physics and calibration laboratory. Before coming to the IAEA she worked in the SSDL of the Radiation and Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) where she developed new calibration methods for dosimeters used in diagnostic radiology. Physics Consulting Medical Physics Phoenix, Arizona, USA Raymond K. Wu, Ph.D., DABR, DABMP, FACMP, FAAPM, FIOMP earned his PhD degree in Physics from Dartmouth College in USA in 1974. He completed his postdoctoral training in the Department of Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He joined Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia as an Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor with joint appointments in the Radiotherapy Department and the Nuclear Medicine Department. Since 1985, he held the position of Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk Virginia and served as the chief physicist in the Radiation Oncology department of its affiliated hospitals until his retirement from the academics in 2002. From 2002 to 2008 he was Chief of Physics in the Radiation Oncology Department of the OhioHealth Medical System in Columbus Ohio. From 2008 to 2015 he was the Chief of Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology & CyberKnife of the University of Arizona Cancer Center, and as the Chief of Physics of the Gamma Knife section of the Barrow Neurological Institute, both in Phoenix Arizona.
