David Charles Lloyd, PhD Research Scientist
Public Health England Radiation Protection Division
Center for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards Chilton,
Didcot, Oxon, UK
Dr David Lloyd studied zoology in the University of Wales and after a 3 year post doctorate fellowship in zoology he joined the UK National Radiological Protection Board in 1971. Here he led the research group in Radiation Cytogenetics which developed biological dosimetry methods for investigating actual or suspected overexposures to radiation. He has led numerous investigations of victims of radiation accidents, world-wide, in order to establish radiation doses from biological indicators of cellular damage, in particular, chromosomal alterations. The research expanded into using chromosomal aberrations to probe more fundamentally how radiation affects cells and DNA and how the effects change with various physical parameters such as dose, dose rate and linear energy transfer. Since formal retirement in 2008 he continues working as an emeritus researcher and undertakes consultancies for the IAEA and WHO. He co-chairs the WHO BioDoseNet that coordinates biodosimetry networking world-wide.
